Less Than Half of Top 500 Sites Optimized for Mobile

Of the top 500 sites on the Internet, only 200 are optimized for mobile. As reported by ReadWriteWeb, mobile performance consultancy Blaze found that of Alexa’s top 500 sites, only 42% were optimized for iOS while 38% were optimized for Android. From our perspective, this data is a bit shocking. Today we see up to 25% of traffic on Connections Media client sites coming from mobile devices, and much of that is driven by social media. Given the rapid growth of both social media and smartphones, we view a site without a compelling mobile experience as a missed opportunity. Also surprising was the lack of distinct sites for Android phones versus Android tablets. The majority of mobile sites appeared the same on Android phones and tablets, whereas most sites displayed different mobile versions for the iPhone and iPad (such as those pictured below on AccuWeather.com). The study offered an explanation for this challenge of Android-based mobile optimization:
Connections Media is fully prepared to handle that burden for clients and optimize sites for any mobile device. Quite frankly it’s not rocket science; it just requires the proper commitment. ![]() |
