Connections Media Volunteers at Humane Society

October 20, 2016 // Emily Feldmesser

At Connections Media, we recognize the importance of giving back to the community. In fact, giving back is a tradition here: During the holidays, we donate toys to children in need of Christmas gifts through Toys for Tots, and we’ve also volunteered with Martha’s Table Mini Market, assisting with the distribution of groceries to those in need. Our philosophy is that philanthropy at any level fosters better connections and mutual respect, which makes for a stronger community.

That’s why, as a dog-friendly office full of animal lovers, Connections Media decided to continue giving back by volunteering at the Washington Humane Society (WHS). We spent an afternoon learning more about the organization, hearing how they help animals and finding out how we can make a difference. For instance, WHS never rejects an animal, and it even pioneered the District’s first ever animal cruelty law. While we were there, we made unique, durable toys for the dogs and cats using old t-shirts and socks filled with catnip to keep them engaged. We also read stories to the cats, which helped them relax.

Through a fundraising campaign, we were able to sponsor two dogs and a cat. A sponsorship covers the average cost of the animal’s stay at the humane society, including food, treats, bedding and medical care. The two dogs we sponsored, Blanco and Honey, were recently adopted, which was very exciting to hear. To learn more information on how you can adopt the cat we sponsored, M&M, or other animals at the center, visit WHS’s adoption page.

The time spent at the Washington Humane Society opened our eyes to the hard work they do to help the animals in the greater Washington area. They always need volunteers if you’d like to help out too. We hope to spread their message and encourage safe and positive relationships between animals and humans.
